Organized Crime Expands Canadian Drug Trade

organized crimeBritish Columbia has seen a decline in growth operation drug seizures in the last 4 years but that has not slowed the potent marijuana that continues to show up in the country. And this is primarily due to organized crime.

The elicit drug trade is "an evolving and very lucrative industry" according to the annual police force's report. The biggest problem? It is outlaw motorcycle gangs and Asian organized crime groups that are kingpins of the growing marijuana industry.

One big concern is that the marijuana is getting more and more potent tests show. This is a worry especially since the levels of THS - the potent ingredient in pot - has increased from 9.96% in 2005 to 10.25% in 2006. The levels for 2007 have not yet been determined. But marijuana is not the only problem as Ecstasy and other various substances are playing a large part as well.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police says bringing the drugs into the United States "continues to be a concern for both countries." The smuggling can happen by boat, transport trucks, cars or even helicopter drops.

Organized Crime In The Retail Industry

organized crimeTarget, Walmart, Home Depot and Best Buy are just a few of the large retail stores that are targeted by organized crime every single day. Whether these thieves are after electronics, clothing items or tools they go for the store that their merchandise is at.

But the people hitting these stores are not your fly-by-night criminal they are organized crime groups that have high skilled operations going on with career criminals. They come into towns in swarms and swoop down to get what they want and get out fast.

In all retail crime accounts for about $30 billion in stolen merchandise per year. Where are these stolen items being sold? Mainly the Internet at auction sites such as eBay. This gives the criminals complete anonymity and this is just one of the reasons why online auction sites is their perfect foil.

So the next time you buy off the online auctions think of where that merchandise may have come from and how it got there.
