Hate Crime Up 6 Percent

hate crimeThe FBI reported this last Monday that hate crime was up 6% in 2006 in the United States. What accounts for more than half of these hate crimes is racial prejudice.

There were 7,772 criminal instances of hate crime across the nation as reported by police. Most of these victims or property crimes are because of racial bias, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic or national origin and disabilities such as physical or mental.

The tree and noose incidents of Jena, Louisiana were not even a part of this national study. But the Jena incidents as well as other 'noose' incidents around the country have been a reason for civil rights protests.

The Rev. Al Sharpton says, "The FBI report confirms what we have been saying for many months about the severe increase in hate crimes." Sharpton continues to say, "What is not reported , however, is the lack of prosecution and serious investigation by the Justice Department to counter this increase in hate crime."

Date Rape Case Eases On Bounty Hunter But Problems Still Loom

date rapeNabbing the date rape perpetrator Andrew Luster in Mexico a few years back has been haunting Dog the Bounty Hunter for a while now. Mexico has finally agreed to drop the extradition charges and not seek further indictments on the famed criminal bounty hunter. And that is a good thing since I think he did way more good getting this date rape creep off the streets, (no matter if it was in Mexico) and putting him in jail.

But of course, Dog is now in hot water for a hate crime of his own. Crime might be too strong of a word but the words Dog used to his son in a private conversation that has now become public is coming back to haunt him. A&E has cancelled his show and for now he is trying to make nice with all he offended.

I for one, feel he is not a prejudiced man and made a really bad choice in using those words. But let's face it, he is putting the criminals off the streets for us and let's hope he can get back to work soon and leave all of this behind him.

Senate Approves New Legislation For Hate Crime Law

hate crimeThe Senate has just approved legislation to approve federal hate crime laws. The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crime Prevention Act or LLEHCP fills in the holes left that federal authorities desperately need to prosecute bias-motivated crimes.

The Anti-Defamation League or ADL has highly praised this move, saying they welcome Senate approval of this necessary legislation.

This legislation allows the Justice Department to aide local hate crime prosecutions and when needed, to investigate and prosecute on their own certain cases in which bias has been a factor due to a persons race, color, ethnic background, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or disability.

While many states have increased their penalties for hate crime laws others like Arkansas, New Mexico, Wyoming, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Hawaii and South Carolina have no hate crime laws at all. This new legislation should aid the future hate crime victims in those states.
