Hard Economic Times May Lead To Higher Crime Rates

crime ratesWill hard economic times lead to higher crime rates? From a leaked document of the Home Office in London the report states that various crimes may increase due to financial hardships of many people. People losing their jobs could very well lead to more burglary's and theft. But can economic hardships turn ordinarily 'good' people into criminals or even racists? In desperate times people do desperate things they normally wouldn't but turning them against their own longstanding belief system may be going to far. But not all crimes are due to rise in hard times thanks in part to technology. Cars are harder to steal than they used to be and there are securtiy cameras in nearly every store and street corner. Even televisions and hi fi systems tend to be too large in many instances for thieves to bother with. Prison sentences are getting more harsh and the police forces are larger so maybe this leaked document has us all worried for no reason.

Crime Rates Reduced With Preschool?

crime ratesMany know that the belief that a good, quality early education and childcare can promote a child's academic and social success. But to actually reduce crime rates for many boys and girls later in life? This is the belief of Seatles Chief of Police Ebonee Heller. And studies have backed him up with this theory. These studies show that a good preschool reduces crime rates drastically. You can take the time now to do what is right for your child, or pay later. Parental education is key as well as making sure lower income and middle income families can afford a good early education for their children just like everyone else. It might just work.

Does The Death Penalty Lower Crime Rates?

crime ratesThe death penalty is one of the most controversial issues out there. There are plenty of good arguments for and against it. One of the biggest topics concerning the death penalty is the question, does it really lower crimes rates and deter criminals?

Every state has their own laws on the death penalty with New Jersey aiming to ban it altogether. In over six states there have been concerns with the use of lethal injections. But the main question overall is if it acutally deters would-be criminals.

Answering in the affirmative to that question is academic studies according to the Associated Press. The answers they have come up with have been that 3 to 18 lives are saved each year with each killer that is brought to justice using the death penalty.

Opponents of course will argue with these findings as well as some scientists actually questioning the validity of these studies.

The studies done by scientists take into effect the varying death penalty executions by state, county and the year as well as the impact of such factors as per capita income, unemployment and occurances of arrest and convictions. They then take these results and make their conclusions accordingly.

What is your opinion? Are you for or against the death penalty and why?

Crime Rates Rise In U.S. For The First Time In 12 Years

crime ratesAccording to a report put out by the FBI this past Monday, crime rates in the United States have risen. And what is most disturbing is these statistics include violent crime rates which have gone up for the first time in 12 years. From 2005 to 2006 robberies rose 7.2% while in the same time period murders rose 1.8%.

The report puts forth a new challenge for the Bush administration, which of course has faced increased criticism from the Democratic congress. The criticism stems from cuts the Bush administration has made in federal assistance to local law enforcement agencies over the last 6 years.

An anti-crime package proposed by the Justice Department this year sets new minimum sentences, establishes stronger penalties for violations of firearms and widens conspiracy laws that will make for easier prosecution of violent gang members.
