More Crime News On Prescription Drug Mix Ups

crime newsA headline today on msn.com was titled Drug Name Mix Ups Getting Worse. In the article was cited several cases of prescription drug mix ups.

One where a child went to the emergency room for asthma seeking the allergy drug Zyrtec and instead got the schizophrenia drug Zyprexa. And another where a patient was given the bipolar drug Laictal instead of the Labetalol for high blood pressure.

When Dr. Julius Pham discovered a critical error of one of his patients he said, "If you have ever had that sinking feeling that drops to the bottom of your stomach, I had it."

His critically ill heart patient was given an antibiotic instead of a blood pressure drug, and he didn't make it.

And many of you have heard of the actor Dennis Quaid's twin babies being given massive amounts of the blood thinner Heparin because of a label mix up.

Drug mix-ups have more than doubled since 2004 with 1.4 % of the errors resulting in patient harm.

In the article some suggestions were made for solving the problem such as pharmacies separating and differentiating easily confused drugs and labeling some drugs with capital letters in part of the names. Also doctors could write on the prescriptions what each drug was for.

The prescription drug mix up is all crime news to me.

Over Prescribing Meds - The New Crime News

crime newsWith the death last year of Anna Nicole Smith and now Heath Ledger of most likely prescription medications, is the new crime news going to be the doctors who over prescribe these medications?

Just how safe are the drugs we are taking? Many believe that if your doctor prescribed them, then they are sure to be safe. So wrong. Often times one doctor will prescribe one medication (or several), and another will prescribe something else, and the next thing you know you are putting a very dangerous combination of substances in your body.

I know because this happened to my father. One doctor prescribed a cortisone inhaler for a lung problem and even though my father had told him he had been on the blood thinning drug Coumadin for years, he gave it to him anyway. My father essentially 'bled out' suffering a massive hematoma in his lower back that resulted in the paralization of one leg.

This is just one example of what can happen, Anna Nicole Smith and Heath Ledger are another example - death. Some are speculating Ledger may have combined prescription sleep medications with over the counter ones, resulting in his death.

What can be done to control the over use and over prescribing of medications that can have lasting and deadly consequences? Here is one book you might want to read.

Crime Stories That Fascinate Us All

crime storiesWhat is it about crime stories that keep us fascinated? TV shows and movies will never stop churning out abstract entertainment on serial killers, murderers, kidnappers and the like. Why do we follow such stories and what does it say about us?

As mentioned below there is numerous Jack the Ripper documentaries and movies that show no sign of slowing down. The famed Zodiac killer who left cryptic clues continues to puzzle lawmakers and curious citizens alike as does the Manson murders, Ted Bundy, mob stories and others.

Crime and punishment have always been a keen topic of filmakers and there is no shortage of those of us who still find these subjects fascinating. Maybe it has something to do with the detective in us all. We all want to find that one more clue as to 'who done it' or get the answers as to 'why they did it.'

Recently I saw a list of the top 10 true crime movies of all time. I am not sure I agree with them all but here they are; The St. Valentines Day Masacre (1967), Monster (2003), Reversal of Fortune (1990), The French Connection (1971), Heavenly Creatures (1994), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Rope (1948) and Compulsion (1959), All the President's Men (1976), Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) and my personal favorite, In Cold Blood (1967).

The Biggest Unsolved Murders Case Of All Time

unsolved murdersThe biggest unsolved murders case of all time would have to be Jack the Ripper of course. And in the 120 years since someone murdered at least 5 prostitutes in the White Chapel area of London there have been numerous books, movies and TV specials documenting the case.

Everyone from "Ripperologists" to famed author Pat Cornwall has studied the case and come up with their own conclusions. Why does this still fascinate us after all these years? It is hard to say exactly but it has to do with the time period, the fact that he is the first documented serial killer, the manner and gruesomness of the killings and just the element of not knowing. We all love a mystery and this is by far the most mysterious unsolved murders case.

Unlike serial killers Ted Bundy, Son of Sam or John Wayne Gacy who were ordinary citizens more or less, Jack the Ripper lists of suspects is long with some very notable names on it. They include James Maybrick, Walter Sickert, Francis Tumblety, George Chapman, Aaron Kosminski, Montague John Druitt, Michael Ostrog, Prince Albert Victor, Dr. Thomas Neil Cream and Queen Victoria's personal physician Sir William Gull to name just a few.

I have read many books on the subject of Jack the Ripper and I have to say I think Pat Cornwall has come closest to digging up real evidence. She names the famous painter Walter Sickert as being Jack the Ripper and it sure looks like a good posibility to me. This is a picture of Sickert looking quite menacing.

Girls Juvenile Crime Rates Rising

juvenile crimeAn unfortunate thing is happening across the country, the juvenile crime rates are rising and this time its the girls and not the boys that are the reason. Statistics show that there is a national trend of more teenage girls being involved in violent crimes. These girls are ending up on the wrong side of the law and the only explanation experts have is that, the system is made for boys.

National expert and researcher on the issue, Lawanda Ravoira explains, "If we look at the entire continuum of professionals, from our judges, police officers and direct service providers, everyone is frustrated with the lack of services to help girls."

Criminal cases involving girls 18 or younger has jumped 104 percent between the years 1985 and 2004. The top non-violent offenses for females are, (in order); shoplifting, liquor law violations, simple assaults, disorderly conduct, larceny, drug violations, runaways, curfew violations and vandelism. But violent crime rates amongst these juveniles is what has law enforcement officials most concerned.

Unmanaged anger, lack of parental supervision or a general societal trend? No one can pinpoint exactly where the rise in murders, rape, robbery and aggravated assault stems from.

Crime News - Is It Time To Change The Manner Of Execution For The Death Penalty?

crime newsRight now in all 50 states the manners of execution are as follows; electrocution, lethal gas, lethal injection and in 1 - 3 states there is still hanging and the firing squad. By far the most popular method of execution is lethal injection.

What got me writing about this subject today is a story I saw on CNN this morning. They are now questioning (as they did in the past with electrocution and gas) if the cocktail of deadly drugs they now give inmates is cruel and unusual punishment that should be abolished. Cited was past examples of death row inmates that were laid out on the gurney and prepared to die (after first going to sleep by the first injection) but things went horribly wrong. It took one man one and a half hours to die instead of the normal 10 - 15 minutes. And they say that it goes very wrong more often than not.

CNN interviewed the doctor that actually came up with the deadly cocktail of drugs in the 80's that is now used today and he agreed that the method should be looked into for change. But what astonished me most was his final answer for a solution to the problem. He actually suggested we bring back the guillotine! I found it absurd that someone in this day and age would actually bring us back to the middle ages and suggest such a thing. The good doctor says, "It's final and it's quick, so it's a good method."

Oh give me a break! Yeah, let's just go cut people's head off. I don't think so plus I am sure cruel and unusual punishment arguments could be brought up over this method as well since surely you have heard that it is highly suspect that most beheading victims do not die right away and may even be cognizant for up to a minute.

The U.S. Supreme Court will take up this thorny issue today.

What is your thoughts on this matter of crime news?

Gun Control - Way To Stop Crime?

stop crimeHere is another big debate up for question today - gun control. There are plenty of pros and cons for both sides, question is...where do you stand?

Even the mention of this subject can cause heated debate so you better watch out who you bring it up to, which is why I am doing this from the safety of my computer. But to tell you the truth I stand somewhere in the middle.

I do not believe the government has the right to disarm any of us, not to mention this would be a violation of our constitutional rights and a project too enormous to ever undertake. But even if they could, should they?

Disarming the public at large is something that would only push an underground trade movement of all firearms - ones that are perfectly legal now. And it would only allow the criminals access to these weapons and not the general public. But I do believe that certain firearms should be banned.

Some believe that the police forces are simply not to stop crime but to be around to arrest indivduals after a crime has already been comitted. That is a whole other subject but should the automatic machine guns and hand guns that are simply designed to kill, be on the streets? No, they shouldn't, but unfortunately they are and often these criminals have more firearm power than the police officers.

I believe people kill people but I also believe that guns make it a hell of a lot more easier to do it.
