Lead - Cause Of Juvenile Crime?
The Environmental Protection Agency says that lead can find its way in humans through deteriorating paint, dust, air, drinking water, food and contaminated soil. While this problem was much worse before the 70's it is still a problem in vegetable gardens and even in the old pipes in many cities.Dr. Needleman, professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine studied children with the effects of lead poisoning and determined that they scored much lower on IQ tests and that juvenile crime rates increased among children who had higher concentrations of lead in their systems. He stated, "Exposure to lead, at doses below those which bring children to medical attention, is associated with increased aggression, disturbed attention and delinquency. A meaningful strategy to reduce crime is to eliminate lead from the environment of children."
