Does The Death Penalty Lower Crime Rates?
The death penalty is one of the most controversial issues out there. There are plenty of good arguments for and against it. One of the biggest topics concerning the death penalty is the question, does it really lower crimes rates and deter criminals?Every state has their own laws on the death penalty with New Jersey aiming to ban it altogether. In over six states there have been concerns with the use of lethal injections. But the main question overall is if it acutally deters would-be criminals.
Answering in the affirmative to that question is academic studies according to the Associated Press. The answers they have come up with have been that 3 to 18 lives are saved each year with each killer that is brought to justice using the death penalty.
Opponents of course will argue with these findings as well as some scientists actually questioning the validity of these studies.
The studies done by scientists take into effect the varying death penalty executions by state, county and the year as well as the impact of such factors as per capita income, unemployment and occurances of arrest and convictions. They then take these results and make their conclusions accordingly.
What is your opinion? Are you for or against the death penalty and why?
