Does The Death Penalty Lower Crime Rates?

crime ratesThe death penalty is one of the most controversial issues out there. There are plenty of good arguments for and against it. One of the biggest topics concerning the death penalty is the question, does it really lower crimes rates and deter criminals?

Every state has their own laws on the death penalty with New Jersey aiming to ban it altogether. In over six states there have been concerns with the use of lethal injections. But the main question overall is if it acutally deters would-be criminals.

Answering in the affirmative to that question is academic studies according to the Associated Press. The answers they have come up with have been that 3 to 18 lives are saved each year with each killer that is brought to justice using the death penalty.

Opponents of course will argue with these findings as well as some scientists actually questioning the validity of these studies.

The studies done by scientists take into effect the varying death penalty executions by state, county and the year as well as the impact of such factors as per capita income, unemployment and occurances of arrest and convictions. They then take these results and make their conclusions accordingly.

What is your opinion? Are you for or against the death penalty and why?

Got Any Ideas To Stop Crime In Schools?

ideas to stop crimeThere have been more than 50 school shootings in the United States and around the world since the first one on February 2, 1996 in Moses Lake, WA when 14 year old Barry Loukaitis opened fire in his Algebra class. The youngest assailant was a 6 year old boy and the most infamous are Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris of Littleton, CO.

Since then school shootings have gone from rare and unheard of occurances to almost common place. What is happening with our youth of the world and why are they turning to deadly violence to vent their unhappiness and anger toward society? And are there any new ideas to stop crime in our schools in the future?

Many of these assailants are victims themselves of bullying and being ostracized by their fellow classmates. While bullying is a devastating and horrible act upon an individual it unfortunately has been happening for decades longer than 1996 with these victims not lashing back with such deadly force.

Bullying, teasing and being ostracized by your fellow classmates does lead to depression and built up hostility and anger. What authorities, teachers and parents need to do is reach out to these children before it gets beyond the boiling point and get the children into counseling and support groups, anywhere that they can get help. Move out of town or out of state if that will get them in a new and helpful surrounding.

If you have any other ideas to stop crime in our schools we would like to know about it.

Dog Fighting - Crime Videos

Dog fighting is a disgusting crime as this crime video proves. It shows the ugly side and the sweeter side of these dogs. Proving that the animals are trained to kill not instinctively but by humans.

Michael Vick got some 20 months in prison for his dog fighting participation, the death and cruelty to animals that he partook in on his own property. Tougher laws need to be enacted.

Right now in Congress there is the Dog Fighting Prohibition Act that hopefully will be passed. This bill is about all those who breed dogs for fighting purposes and for those who buy, sell, transport, train or posses fighting dogs and even the ones who participate as a spectator at a dog fight. This is important legislation that needs to get passed.

Dog fighting is big business for the criminals who participate in it but lets deter them by putting them behind bars if they do. Hopefully Vick's sentence is the first of many arrests and convictions.

Organized Crime Expands Canadian Drug Trade

organized crimeBritish Columbia has seen a decline in growth operation drug seizures in the last 4 years but that has not slowed the potent marijuana that continues to show up in the country. And this is primarily due to organized crime.

The elicit drug trade is "an evolving and very lucrative industry" according to the annual police force's report. The biggest problem? It is outlaw motorcycle gangs and Asian organized crime groups that are kingpins of the growing marijuana industry.

One big concern is that the marijuana is getting more and more potent tests show. This is a worry especially since the levels of THS - the potent ingredient in pot - has increased from 9.96% in 2005 to 10.25% in 2006. The levels for 2007 have not yet been determined. But marijuana is not the only problem as Ecstasy and other various substances are playing a large part as well.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police says bringing the drugs into the United States "continues to be a concern for both countries." The smuggling can happen by boat, transport trucks, cars or even helicopter drops.

Are Police Getting Too Agressive In Their Efforts To Stop Crime?

stop crimeWhat is going on with the police forces around the country? Lately it seems you cannot turn on a television news program without seeing some police officer in no particular state who has acted too aggressively. They are whipping out their stun guns and slamming people on cars using excessive force and slapping them with handcuffs. Often this extreme force is used seemingly on innocent or unthreatening individuals.

While we can say the police are facing more dangers these days than say decades ago and they are looking for new ways to stop crime, this behavior seems way out of line. Should these officers use more human skills and judgement to determine if these people who are just getting pulled over for inane things?

Like for instance the recent case in Utah where the office pulled over a very clean cut man who was driving with his wife and children and certainly did not seem inebriated, and acted as if he were a terrorist. When the driver questioned "What in the world is wrong with you?" to the officer, the officer reacted by stunning the man with his stun gun.

What is going on? Are officers trained to think of every US citizen is out to get them or a criminal? We know the officers need to defend themselves but something does need to change here as it seems to be getting way out of hand.

Advancements In Technology To Stop Crime Include Speech Analytics

advancements in technology to stop crimeSo what is the latest in advancements to stop crime? How about speech analytics research. You may have already heard about how they have used speech technology before such as with sounds and trends in recorded conversations but now there is something different.

The new speech software has the ability to detect the actual emotional state and well being of the caller. This software will determine when a person is sounding 'stressed' which alerts authorities to a potential problem.

Voice recognition is the new advancements in technology to stop crime and is being used more and more. The law enforcement community now uses this tool called the Computer Voice Stress Analyzer or CVSA. Not widely publicized, this new tool is acting as a sort of polygraph or lie detector machine. As the police question you they use this software to determine your voices emotional state. Could work for you or against you - like getting you arrested if you are a pretty emotional person.

The next time you are talking to the police remember you may be listened to more closely than you think. Like a polygraph though this technology is not yet admissible in a court of law.

Missing Moms And Housewives Are Today's True Crime Stories

true crime storiesIt all exploded in the media with the disappearance and death of Laci Peterson. Of course, her husband Scott was the killer and now he is on death row in California.

Now it is the story of another Peterson, Stacey who is also missing and presumed dead. Her husband Sgt. Drew Peterson is the prime suspect. There have been numerous cases of missing and murdered moms and housewives in between these two cases and as in a great number of true crime stories the husband/boyfriend is usually the culprit.

In fact, a staggering 42% of women are killed in the United States by their male partners and 1 in 4 women will be physically abused by their male companions in their lifetime. It is a fact that domestic violence is the number one cause of serious injury to women which makes it more common than muggings and car crashes.

These statistics are overwhelming and so are the constant barrage of true crime stories we get on the news and media shows all the time. The facts can be depressing but there is a ray of hope for women in need and that is to know that the wide exposure of this true crime is letting the rest of the world know of these women's suffering. Hopefully this can bring about change.

If You Want To Stop Crime Now - Push Pepsi

stop crime nowHardened criminals awaiting their last meal on death row prefer Coke over Pepsi as their last drink of choice. Sound funny? Well, there was actually a study done by the good people who promote capital punishment the most - Texans. From the years 1982 to 2003 the results of this study were pretty revealing.

Of the 302 inmates that 'participated' in the study 52 of them declined their last meal and drink altogether but 14.8 percent of the remaining 249 chose Coke over Pepsi hands down. In fact only 3 people chose Pepsi totaling only 1.2%.

Final outcome other than the grim reaper? (Sorry, bad taste, I know.) Death row killers are 10x more likely to choose Coke over Pepsi as their final drink ever. If I were Coke marketer you could either play this up to favor you or stay far away from the results of this unscientific poll. But the best bet would be for Pepsi to play it up with a Stop Crime Now campaign that would probably show them in the most favorable light.
