Crime Rates Rise In U.S. For The First Time In 12 Years

crime ratesAccording to a report put out by the FBI this past Monday, crime rates in the United States have risen. And what is most disturbing is these statistics include violent crime rates which have gone up for the first time in 12 years. From 2005 to 2006 robberies rose 7.2% while in the same time period murders rose 1.8%.

The report puts forth a new challenge for the Bush administration, which of course has faced increased criticism from the Democratic congress. The criticism stems from cuts the Bush administration has made in federal assistance to local law enforcement agencies over the last 6 years.

An anti-crime package proposed by the Justice Department this year sets new minimum sentences, establishes stronger penalties for violations of firearms and widens conspiracy laws that will make for easier prosecution of violent gang members.

Facts On Date Rape

date rapeA rape is not just a person jumping out of the bushes and sexually attacking someone. In fact, in many instances it is not even a stranger that rapes but someone who the person knows. About one half of all the persons raped know the person that attacked them, hence the term date rape.

Friendships, acquaintances and dates more often than not are happy. But in many circumstances they do end in violence and even rape. A date rape is just this; when forced sex occurs between two people who already know each other.

No one has the right to force a sexual act upon another person, regardless if you are on a date or you are with a friend. Girls are most often the victim of date rape but in 7 - 10% of cases date rape victims are male.

Rape is an act of sexual violence and has nothing to do with love, like or friendship. Date rape is always the fault of the rapist even if you are dating this person, you do not owe the person sex. A healthy relationship with someone you are dating or a friendship involves respect and that person will never force you to have sex with them.

Unsolved Crimes Non-Profit Organization

unsolved crimesThe web site Unsolved Crimes, a non-profit organization, assists families who have lost love ones of a violent crime. This is a great site for those that are still in grief and have no resolution because of the unsolved crime that has occurred to someone they know and love.
There are thousands of murder cases languishing in police files that have gone unsolved and family members and loved ones wait helplessly and hopelessly to get their case solved.

This is where Unsolved Crimes comes in and tries to help. They pull these unsolved crime files out, pour over them from the beginning and re-examine all the evidence. Volunteers gather to hear all the evidence, review all the contents of the file and look over every detail. These experts include psychologists, handwriting experts, private investigators and even legal advisers. They then share any information they have uncovered with the police departments who may use it for (hopefully) eventual arrests.
Unsolved Crimes motto is: "We won't let the victim die twice - once in the field and once in the file."

Stop A Sex Crime From Happening In Your Neighborhood

DNA Backlog Slows Unsolved Crimes

unsolved crimesThe huge FBI database of CODIS or Combined DNA Index System can be a valuable tool in finding a conclusion to unsolved crimes. However, the system is not living up to its potential and it does not prove as effective as it could be because of a severe backlogging in processing DNA samples.

Figures submitted to the U.S. Senate by the Justice Department have stated that almost 85% of all samples gathered up by the FBI since the year 2001 have remained unprocessed and have yet to be entered into the database. This could be disastrous for unsolved crimes cases.

A spokesman for the FBI said they receive 8,000 samples a month but only process 5,500. The backlog for unsolved crimes and criminals now totals around 200,000.

What should be done? Congress needs to check into the backlog problems more deeply and find solutions. Possibly finding the need to hire additional lab workers and technical resources to help bring CODIS back to its full running potential to solve unsolved crimes could be the answer.

Up Close Crime Scene Photos

crime scene photosFor those who aren't faint of heart check out Crime Scene Virtual Tour on the Web, or CSVT, for that up close and personal invite into a crime scene.
At Crime Scene Virtual Tour you access a crime scene from any angle and get an overall idea of the place and what happened there. At CSVT you can zoom or pan, tilt and rotate the entire scene and make your own observations as to what happened and how. It will be just as good as if you were actually there and these crime scene photos could be the key evidence that convinces a jury.

CSVT is breaking the limitations and enabling people and law enforcement personal to navigate around the scene like never before without actually having to be there. This won't be like viewing crime scene photos through other peoples lenses since you have all the control of where you want to be in the room and how close you want to view it. The interactive map at CSVT is a helpful tool as well as crime scene sketching beside the images. With all this you can examine every piece of evidence up close.
