Organized Crime Expands Canadian Drug Trade
British Columbia has seen a decline in growth operation drug seizures in the last 4 years but that has not slowed the potent marijuana that continues to show up in the country. And this is primarily due to organized crime. The elicit drug trade is "an evolving and very lucrative industry" according to the annual police force's report. The biggest problem? It is outlaw motorcycle gangs and Asian organized crime groups that are kingpins of the growing marijuana industry.
One big concern is that the marijuana is getting more and more potent tests show. This is a worry especially since the levels of THS - the potent ingredient in pot - has increased from 9.96% in 2005 to 10.25% in 2006. The levels for 2007 have not yet been determined. But marijuana is not the only problem as Ecstasy and other various substances are playing a large part as well.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police says bringing the drugs into the United States "continues to be a concern for both countries." The smuggling can happen by boat, transport trucks, cars or even helicopter drops.
